When I Grow Up…

Being on the career journey is not universally accepted and can be universally judged 🤔

We live in a society that encourages kids from a young age to know what they are going to be when they grow up. Apparently, one is supposed to have their lives figured out by the time they are 18 and plod along with that course. And if not 18 then by 22 max. But that’s not realistic. At 18 I thought that I would get married, start a religious center in the middle of nowhere, and have 12 kids. Um… not exactly how life worked out. AT 15 I wanted to be a dentist and a journalist.

I’m the quintessential inspired person. I get inspired by something, it excites me, I become passionate about it, I get involved and at some point, the passion fizzles and I lose interest. But working for others never worked for me and that’s probably why I was always searching.

These are list of some of the careers I've had/ have

Teacher

I taught Sunday school starting in 12th grade and over the following 13 years taught varying ages in different schools.

Ending with our move to Long Island in 2017, that was my last teaching job.

I taught in New Jersey in a preschool
  • Worcester, MA – 4-7th grade and HS dorm counselor
  • Brooklyn, NY –  High School
  • Greenwich, CT – Hebrew School

Chef

When I was in teachers’ seminary in Brooklyn, I took a position as an apprentice for one night in a culinary school. Which was an incredible experience. I learned how to make fancy sauces and butcher a cow. I also had to wash and dry dishes and run errands whenever the chef ran out of something.
A couple years later, I opened Zelda’s Catering and actually did some pretty cool events. My two biggest events were for a religious organization that had a buffet-style event with 400+ people. I loved it. I love the creativity that comes from me in the kitchen.

However, I decided that it wasn’t the life that I wanted with a family, as a caterer one was on their feet for hours and many evenings. I always wanted to be a mom.

How cute is she in her little chef hat!?

Personal Trainer

After our daughter, Leah was born, I really struggled with my PCOS. I wasn’t losing weight no matter what I did.

So I hired a personal trainer to come and train me at home.

That inspired me to get involved and start training. I had a love and hate relationship with training.

On one hand, I loved helping people get healthy and offering them options. Plus it put me in a place of focusing on my health. On the other hand, clients would come to me and complain they weren’t losing weight, and when I asked further I discovered their eating habits needed help.

Also, I didn’t always enjoy having people in my personal apartment space. We were living in a one-bedroom and had nowhere to train other than my living room. As much as I’m an extrovert, I value my privacy. Probably even more so because I share so much lol

I trained for 2 years and stopped in 2017 when we moved to Long Island

Realtor

This is a biggie. When I married my husband, Asaf, and he shared that he did Real Estate, I thought “oh cool, we will have $”. Boy was that naive.

On one of our dates, Asaf, shared with me a story of one of his colleagues whose wife would do the backend of RE for him – like posting and bookkeeping. My response was – I have my own career and that doesn’t interest me.

We have a saying – man plans and Gd laughs. Because, not 6 months after our wedding, that’s what I did. Asaf and I just opened our first real estate brokerage and someone needed to do the back end.

The details of which I will save for another time, especially the part of working together with your brand new spouse.

5 years later, we bought our first house together and moved to Long Island, NY. There I started working in sales for about a year and a half. And I hated it.

However, I do enjoy investing and renovating in the Real estate field.

Health Coach

I gained and lost weight constantly – like a yoyo – after our daughter was born. Until I finally found a plan that worked. It stopped being a diet and started being a lifestyle change very quickly.

I lost 45 lbs and maintained that for 2 years until I started IVF.  (Read my story here)

Because of my lifestyle change, I only gained 20 lbs. I lost 10 of those and have been consistently maintaining my weight for a year now.

When I realized how successful I was, I had to share it. I became so passionate about it. And now help others make lifestyle changes too.
I also feel that all my careers till 2017 helped shape my health coaching practice and helped me find my niche.

So…
Don’t feel pressured if you are still looking for where you fit it!
